Ugly Location Challenge
One of the best things about photography as a career is the ability to branch out and creatively challenge myself. When I saw this post about shooting at Lowe's I knew I wanted to attempt my own challenging location shoot. Its easy to create gorgeous images with idyllic landscapes when you live in a beautiful place. I have the luxury of having lived in incredible places in the United States and have never wanted for a perfect setting to shoot in. From the redwoods of Northern California to the rain-forests of Southeast Alaska I merely have to step outside to capture gorgeous scenery. Therefore it was a bit of a stretch to find “ugly locations” for the challenge. I currently reside in Sitka Alaska, a small island with a population of around 9,000. There is no Lowes, or Walmart or Target etc, so I had to be a bit more imaginative when location scouting.
I reached out to a friend who makes some incredible jewelry and was in need of updated headshots to assist me with this project.
“Sexi Seaweed's collection of jewelry and accessories is "Inspired by the Wild," and handmade with passion in Northern California. The siren behind the Seaweed is Amelia Mosher, artist & designer originally from southeast Alaska. She credits Pacific Northwest Totemic Art for her interest in Regalia and story-telling through archetypal symbols in her work. She selects materials based on their metaphysical properties, cultural significance, and any other element of significance that make them distinctive and special.”

The Bar Scene
The Pioneer Bar of Sitka Alaska is a well known fisherman's haunt. The recently reupholstered booths polished this scene quite nicely.
